Changing eye color

About the Tutorial:

Here I will attempt to show you how to add more funk or color to an ordinary eye.

We'll be converting the first image (© GettyImages) to the second:

Step by Step:

Open the image in Photoshop.

Create a new layer above your image called Iris. See below.

Now with that layer selected, trace the entire iris of the eye. You can magnify the image to help you trace better. There are two ways to go about selecting the iris:

» Using the Magic Wand tool, adjusting the tolerance level.
» Using the Polygonal Lasso tool by tracing the iris.

I've used the Polygonal Lasso tool for selection, see below.

Remember, do not deselect the iris as you need to fill this area with paint.

Using the Paint Bucket tool, select a color and fill in the area that you selected over the iris. See below.

Once you've done that, change the Layer Blend from Normal to Overlay.

If you like, you can stop here at this step, but I still think the eye is a little plain and in need of more effects.

Continuing On..

If you notice, there is a halo like ring around the pupil. Let's make that stand out.

Create a new layer above the 2nd layer. Name it halo.

Using the Brush tool choose a simple round Basic PS Brush (size 35 in this case). Select a different color and brush in the center of the eye covering the halo.

Now change the layer blend to Overlay like you've done earlier.

Again, if you like, you may stop here but I still want to add more dimension to the flecks in the iris.

Create a new layer above the one called halo.

Again using the Brush tool, set a different size (if you wish), select a different color and brush around the previously done halo-like ring.

Change the layer blend to Overlay like before.

For each step you can always change the opacity of the layer to achieve your desired effect, like how I've done for this last step:

You can continue doing these steps, adding color to the eyebrows, or around the eyes/eyelids and changing the layer to overlay, softlight or hardlight until you're pleased with the end result.

I hope this tutorial has been of help to you in anyway. Have fun experimenting.
